Inspire teachers
Introduction
INSPIRE internship is a pre-professional teacher preparation programme that aims to inspire young Nepalese youths to be professional teachers. Candidates for the programme were selected on the basis of their motivation to join teaching profession and grow as professional teachers.
They are continuously mentored by teacher trainers and site supervisors to involve students actively in real world learning environment. Teachers’ regular constructive feedback ensures that the expected learning is taking place. Thus, it is a unique opportunity for trainee teachers to enhance their professional skills, gain self confidence and identify self strengths and weaknesses. It is a very crucial transition from study to work which helps them to determine their career goals and interests. It provides students with a platform to hands on learning environment. It will prepare them to tackle issues, speak knowledgeably about educational fields and develop understanding of the subject matters.
Objectives
Specifically the course will enable students to:
• develop an insight into the practical techniques of child friendly practices;
• understand the unique quality of each child and their learning styles;
• develop observation skills and recording the behaviour of children;
• examine the uses of different teaching strategies critically;
• integrate different language skills;
• examine the way children develop as readers;
• address and teach various skills and aspects of English language;
• plan everyday lessons;
• design and prepare teaching materials.
Teaching Learning Principles
The class will be conducted on a workshop mode. It will help interns to experience the learning activities themselves before implementing it to the class.
They will be involved on hands-on learning activities and a variety of learning strategies which they can simply take back to their classroom teaching. After each activity, interns will be encouraged to modify and think of other variations of it to maximize their creative potential and have their ownership. Group works, presentation, research and interactive discussions will be a regular feature of the class in addition to the individual work and self reflection.
Evaluation
The evaluation of interns is ongoing and it consists of day-to-day work in and out of the class, class participation, critical thinking, presentation, group works, reflection and involvement in the particular assigned classroom. Students must submit their two individual portfolios for each subject at the end of the programme. Portfolios will include:
